Tongue Tie (Frenotomy)

Tongue Tie (Frenotomy) 〰️

We offer assessment and treatment for Tongue Ties (Ankyloglossia) in babies up to 8 weeks old.

A tongue tie occurs when the small piece of tissue (the lingual frenulum) under the tongue is too tight or short, restricting tongue movement. This can sometimes cause difficulties with breastfeeding, including poor latch, nipple pain, prolonged feeds, or inadequate weight gain.

If appropriate, a tongue tie release (frenotomy) can be performed during the appointment. The procedure is quick and is generally well tolerated by young infants.

Our Doctors:

Tongue tie assessments and releases are performed by specially trained GPs:

  • Dr Amanda Sabel

  • Dr Tafadzwa (Taf) Makamure

Eligibility:

We assess and perform tongue tie releases for babies up to 8 weeks of age. If your baby is 9 to 10 weeks old, we can still provide an assessment; however, if a tongue tie release is required, we may need to refer you to another provider.

We encourage families to seek an assessment as early as possible, as earlier treatment can be beneficial for babies experiencing feeding difficulties.
